Near the western horizon at sunset, Mars is 1 finger-width to Saturn’s lower left, and Venus is 3 finger-widths to the lower right. Today is Lammas, a cross-quarter day marking the beginning of the harvest season.

3 Aug
Last-quarter moon at 0459 UT

4 Aug
Just before dawn, the waning crescent moon stands to the right of the Pleiades high in the east. Aldebaran is 1½ fist-widths below, and Orion lies beyond Aldebaran, close to the horizon. Use binoculars.

6 Aug
This evening, Venus is little more than 1 finger-width directly below Saturn. Meanwhile, Mars has slipped a little to the upper left.
